Fixed-scope advisory
Backend/API Audit
A focused review of an existing C#/.NET backend or API — architecture, reliability risks, and maintainability, with written findings and prioritised recommendations.
Unlike an open-ended engagement, this is scoped as a fixed piece of work with a defined deliverable: useful as a starting point before committing to something larger, or as a standalone second opinion on a system you already know needs attention but haven't had time to properly assess.
What gets reviewed
- Architecture and design patterns — how the backend or API is structured, and where that structure is working against you
- Reliability risk — error handling, resilience under failure, dependency health, and single points of failure
- Maintainability — test coverage, code organisation, documentation, and how easy the system is to change safely
- Anything specific you flag up front — a slow endpoint, a recurring incident, a part of the codebase nobody wants to touch
What you get
A written findings report with prioritised recommendations — what needs attention first, what can wait, and why. A short walkthrough call to talk through the findings is included; implementing the recommendations is a separate, further-scoped piece of work if you want it actioned.
Where I draw the line
This is a review and a set of recommendations, not a rebuild. I won't push a rewrite where a smaller fix will do, and I'll say plainly where a finding needs deeper investigation than a fixed-scope audit can cover. If the audit surfaces work you want delivered, that's scoped and quoted separately once you've seen the findings.

Rates for the audit are provided after a short discovery call, once I understand roughly what you want reviewed. Delivery is 100% remote.

What does a backend/API audit actually cover?
The audit reviews an existing C#/.NET backend or API across three areas: architecture and design patterns, reliability risk (error handling, resilience under failure, dependency health and single points of failure), and maintainability (test coverage, code organisation, documentation and how safely the system can be changed). You can also flag specific concerns up front, such as a slow endpoint, a recurring incident or a part of the codebase nobody wants to touch.
What do I get at the end of a backend/API audit?
You receive a written findings report with prioritised recommendations, setting out what needs attention first, what can wait, and why. A short walkthrough call to talk through the findings is included. Implementing the recommendations is not part of the audit; if you want the findings actioned, that is scoped and quoted separately once you have seen the report.
How much does a backend/API audit cost?
The audit is a fixed piece of work with a defined deliverable, so it is quoted as a fixed price agreed in writing after a short discovery call to understand roughly what you want reviewed. You can start with a free 20-minute consultation. Where time-based work is more appropriate, the day rate is £400 to £500 ex VAT and the hourly rate is £80 to £100 ex VAT.
Will the audit recommend a full rewrite of my system?
Not by default. The audit is a review and a set of recommendations, not a rebuild, and Jamie will not push a rewrite where a smaller fix will do. Where a finding needs deeper investigation than a fixed-scope audit can cover, the report says so plainly. Any follow-on work you choose to pursue is scoped and quoted separately. Delivery is 100% remote.
