Frequently asked questions

Common questions about working together — pricing, scope, how to start, what’s included, and what happens if something goes wrong.

Pricing & billing

How much does it cost?

Most work is quoted as a fixed price against a written scope — you know the total cost before any work begins. There is no rate card: the exact price depends on scope, complexity and how much scheduling flexibility there is. For exploratory or uncertain-scope work, a time-and-materials cap is agreed in writing before starting. See the pricing page for the full pricing model.

Do you require a retainer or minimum commitment?

No. There is no retainer, minimum commitment, or ongoing subscription. Each engagement is a standalone piece of work. You can commission a single fix and never need to return — that is fine.

Do you charge by the hour or the project?

Almost all work is quoted as a fixed price for a defined scope. If the scope genuinely cannot be defined upfront (e.g. bug hunting where the root cause is unknown), I use a time-capped quote agreed in writing before starting. Open-ended billing without a cap is not something I do.

What are your payment terms?

Invoice on completion (or per milestone for longer engagements), 30 days from invoice date, bank transfer. VAT invoices issued for all UK engagements at 20%. A deposit may be required for larger engagements.

Can I see a quote before committing to anything?

Yes. I always produce a written scope and price before any work starts. You can accept it, ask questions, or walk away — no charge for the scoping stage unless we agree otherwise for particularly complex assessments.

Scope & delivery

How do I get started?

Describe the problem using the contact form or by phone. I will respond within 1–2 working days with a written scope and fixed-price quote. No obligation until you accept.

What if the scope changes mid-project?

Any change to the agreed scope is handled as a change request: I produce a written amendment with the additional cost and timeline impact. We both agree before the changed work begins. Nothing is added to the bill without your written sign-off.

What is the 30-day defect warranty?

If something I built breaks within 30 days of handover and the root cause is in my code, I fix it at no extra charge. The 30 days starts from the handover date. New requirements or scope changes after handover are a new engagement, not a warranty claim.

Who owns the code I commission?

You do. All code produced is yours to keep, modify, or share. It is committed to your repository or delivered in a zip at handover. There is no licence fee for continued use of code I wrote for you.

How long does a typical project take?

Small fixes (VBA bugs, isolated API issues): 1–3 days. Integrations and automation: 1–3 weeks. Larger project delivery: 4–10 weeks. The written scope will always include an estimated timeline and a target handover date.

Working together

Do you work on-site?

No. All work is delivered remotely. I am UK-based and work standard business hours (Mon–Fri, 09:00–17:00 with a lunch break). Communication is via email, Microsoft Teams, or Slack — whatever you prefer. See how remote delivery works for more detail.

What technologies do you work with?

Primarily C# and .NET (all versions from 2.0 to .NET 9), Azure (Functions, App Service, SQL, Storage, DevOps, Entra ID), VBA for Excel and Office, REST APIs, SQL Server, and Entity Framework. See the tech stack page for the full list.

Do you take on work for solo traders and very small businesses?

Yes. Most of my freelance work is for SMEs, startups, and solo operators. There is no minimum company size or minimum spend. If the problem is well-defined and the budget is realistic, I will take it on — see what makes a good fit if you’re unsure.

Can you maintain something you built after handover?

Yes, as a separate retainer or as individual call-off requests. The code is yours and documented so another developer could take it on, but if you want me to continue managing it, we can arrange that.

Are you insured?

Yes. Professional Indemnity, Public Liability, and Cyber insurance are all current. Certificates and relevant limits are available at contract stage.
